Recycling Plastic Bottles: The Cost of Bottled Water

It’s no secret that bottled water creates too much unnecessary waste, and it’s up to you to choose recycling plastic bottles instead. Marketing efforts to get people to pay for bottled water (that sometimes is just tap water!) worked, as within a decade, consumption of bottled water in the U.S. more than doubled, from 13.4 gallons per person to 29.3 gallons per person. Previously in our look at recycling plastic bottles, we included a great video that illustrates the amount of waste that is produced by this consumption of one-time use plastic water bottles.

Only a small fraction of the billions of plastic water bottles used ever ends up being recycled.

Your actions matter! Next time you go to purchase bottled water, consider reusing a bottle instead.
