Hey college students, get ready to start saving up those 100% legally purchased and responsibly consumed alcoholic beverage cans and bottles, because RecycleMania kicks off on February 6, 2012. Each year colleges and universities from across the U.S. and Canada compete in this 8-week long tournament to reduce and recycle waste on campus.
Going For the Gold (Okay, Glass)
RecycleMania is made up of five primary competitions, as well as four targeted material competitions, which basically just means that there’s quite a few ways to win. From highest gross tonnage of recycled materials, to waste minimization per capita, to the Grand Champion prize, which combines trash and core recyclable materials to determine a school’s recycling rate as a percentage of its overall waste generation, there’s plenty of fancy calculations for the math majors and statistical scholars. Schools can also win in specific categories, such as most paper, corrugated cardboard, bottles and cans, food service organics collected or, new for 2012, electronics collected.
