For back to school or anytime to help stay organized or keep a journal, here are some great and creatively recycled notebooks. Did you know that a piece of paper can be recycled five to seven times before the fibers are too short to be used again? Besides paper that has been used again, there are also fun materials to make a notebook out of, from old books to a highly renewable source provided by elephants.

Guided Products
For straight up, utilitarian notebooks, Guided Products are a great choice because they are made in the USA, and they usually have some great sales going on. Their notebooks are made of 100% post consumer FSC certified recycled paper and use soy based inks. The blank, sturdy covers are also perfect for decorating yourself for your own custom notebook. They offer a 15% discount for schools, government orgs and nonprofits.

Look for an FSC symbol when purchasing paper, as it signifies responsible production. FSC stands for the Forest Stewardship Council, which has developed criteria that addresses legal issues, indigenous rights, labor rights, and environmental impacts surrounding forest management.

Ecojot
For notebooks with adorable style, ecojot’s line of journals and notebooks can’t be beat. Designed and printed in Canada with 100% post consumer paper, you can find ecojot notebooks online or in stores near you.

Estimates from Conservatree hold that each ton of 100% post-consumer recycled paper that is used in place of a ton of virgin fiber paper saves 7,000 gallons of water, 4,100 kw hours of electricity, and 60 pounds of air pollution. Take note: For every 42 notebooks made with 100% recycled paper, one tree is saved.

Sukie
Although Sukie produces many great notebooks made with 100% recycled paper, the Rescued Paper Notebook is a fun collection of assorted, discarded papers such as end of print runs, envelopes, or posters. To make each unique Rescued Paper Notebook, these papers are all folded and bound to so you can write fresh on the blank side, saving these colorful scraps from further processing before they can be reused.

Paper From Poop
If you’re looking for that extra special gift, check out journals made from…elephant poo! That’s right, you can recycle poo into paper. Elephant dung is typically full of short to medium-grained fibrous materials from the elephant’s diet which, when processed, makes excellent paper. Now that’s poo-sitive recycling!

Ex Libris Anonymous
The team at Ex Libris Anonymous recycles old books by salvaging the covers and refilling them with fresh pages. The result is always interesting, always one of a kind and ready for a new life. Want a notebook made from a book you own? You can have any book you like journal-ized just for you.
